Okay I've never really been a shipper (which means putting two fictional characters together in a fan pairing) sometimes during a show I might think 'I hope those two wind up together', or why 'they hell is he/she with him/her', but over all I've stayed out of shipping.
I think it's a little scary when people are over obsessed with it but I think shipping can be fun but the one thing I hate is seeing characters being bashed merely because they are 'in the way' of a pairing. I've seen this happen so many times.
There are the stereotypes that "IT'S ALL THOSE DUMB YAOI FANGIRLS WHO BASH STRONG FEMALE CHARACTERS BECAUSE THEY WANT TO MAKE TWO CLEARLY STRAIGHT MALE CHARACTERS GAY!"
Okay before you go bashing (I don't really like the term yaoi, and I use the term slash so that's what I'll call it from here on out) slash fans. Note that it is just a fetish, something that turns you on, some people have it some people don't, my best friend likes slash and I even know some (non-homosexual) boys that don't mind. So stop making everybody who likes slash look like a retarded weeboo.
A lot of slash fans will bash female characters but a lot of people who are crazy about hetero pairing will also bash a characters canon love interest and I will give you an example of both.
First off in Hetalia the character of Seychelles can easily be paired with Arthur or Francis; now that would get in the way of two popular pairings: FrUk and UsUk; so she receives hate from both sides of the pairing war. I've never understood why she gets so much hate, unless I miss something she was in one episode for about three seconds and had one line, how do you hate someone for that. After talking to a friend I realize that there is also a manga out of Hetalia and maybe the manga has something about her that would cause some people to dislike her character, I've looked into why some people hate her and it is all shipping of people pairing her with everybody and naturally characters who get paired with everybody no matter what gender, get called whores. Seychelles is no whore, in the show she's not hitting on every guy, it's the people who pair her up with them. Normally when you bash a character you try to find anything you can to use against them, but I've noticed the only thing they have left is the fact that the anime whitewashed her, as she is supposed to be dark skinned, but still you blame the character for that? She's still herself, that's the animators fault. After all, Turkey and Egypt are whitewashed and you don't hate them for it.
Now in the Harry Potter fandom I've noticed that a percentage of the fans want Hermione and Draco together so naturally Ron, who is Hermione's real love interest, get's bashed. Since Ron is a very developed character so his haters search for anything they can to bring out the worst in him and make him look like somebody no one would ever want to date. So Ron often get's portrayed as a jealous idiot, momma's boy, and that is unrealistic to his character. There is no denying that Ron has jealously issues. If you grew up with five older brothers who all outshine you, and a little sister who gets attention just for being a girl, you'd probably have jealously issues as well. Ron does face challenges as he is clearly jealous of Harry, hence is avoiding him after his name came out of the Goblet of Fire. Despite this, Ron had never let his jealously truly affect his relationship with Harry and they are friends to the end, so he shouldn't receive hate for those moments he is pushed to the edge.
I think people need to stop picking characters just for the sake of fan pairings, if you have something you don't like about a character, than hate them for that, not for what other fans do to them. In most fandoms there are none to very few characters who are actually whores and hit on every guy/girl. People are going to ship whatever they want, and if you think about it, if you write for any pairing that is not canon than you are obviously doing something different, you don't have to make thier canon interest into a bitch or asshole, and you don't have to make a love triangle, they could just be friends with their canon love interest or that person doesn't even have to be mentioned at all.
Just please stop bashing characters just for the sake of pairing, that's just something fans do and if you're going to be a part of a fandom than you should just choose to ignore it and enjoy what you like about that fandom.
Well said!
I'm hardly a shipper, especially when you consider the most frenzied ones even the nice calm ones can be pretty outgoing and worshippy of their ship. Me I like two characters together, that's about it; sans I usually like a reason or there's good chemistry between them that to me makes it viable.
I also admit once upon a time I did get myself caught up in character bashing, usually for comedy but I started to, well not find it funny and especially when I realized I was pathectically derailing a character when there was no need. So I guess that's why I myself find the crazy character bashers to be so distasteful is I once had that path and it was in the lull of youthful fancy and not thinking like I do now about characters.
